| Narvik has been a junction for trade since old times. The port, ice-free all year, and the Ofotbanen, the railway track built at the turn of the century as the world’s northernmost, coldest and hardest railway construction, made the city the most important shipper of iron ore from mines in Sweden and Finland. During World War Two, Narvik was hit hard in battles between German troops and resistance troops from Norway, England, France, and Poland, and much of the city as well as its constructions for handling iron ore were destroyed. |

Narvik is also one of the few cities in Norway that has petro glyphs right in its centre. These rock carvings can be seen
at Brennholtet, and show our forefathers’ wishes for a happy hunting. The carved figures are assumed to be about 5,000 years
old.
