Geneva is best known for its diplomacy and is the most important international co-operation centre (together with New York) because of the numerous international organizations which are based in the city. The headquarters of many of the agencies of the United Nations and the Red Cross are among the best known. It is also the place the Geneva Conventions were signed, which chiefly concern the treatment of wartime non-combatants and prisoners of war.
